Kindergarten Information

for Mrs. Adams's room

p

Dear Parents,

Welcome to kindergarten!  I'm very excited to be working with you and your child.  I realize that you may have many questions about kindergarten at Southport elementary school.  Hopefully, this memo will answer some of those questions.

   Emergency Cards & Times
School begins at 7:40 a.m.  Kindergarten students (only) need to line up by classroom in from of the main doors (door #1.)  I will meet the students at this time and walk them to their locker.  For the safety of all students and staff, after the first day of school, all non-school personnel will need to sign-in at the office and receive a "visitors badge" each time school is entered.

Our school now has a new safety feature  at door #1.  There is a "buzzer" button on the wall to the right side of the doors.  Please listen for a quiet 'click' and then pull open the door on the right.  Proceed to the office.  This is not ment to be unfriendly or the make you feel unwelcome.  Parents are  always welcome at Southport Elementary School!

Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, school is dismissed at 2:30 p.m.  Each Wednesday is early release day which has a dismissal time of 1:15 p.m.  If our child rides the bus or attends the after school program, he or she will be dismissed to those areas by the teacher.  If your child walks home with a sibling, goes to Allendale, or is picked up by an adult, I will walk your child out  "door #2."  I will wait with your child until I see an adult or sibling.  Please do not come to the classroom directly to pick up your child.  Because dismissal is a little hectic, I will always try to walk the kindergarten children out about five minutes early.  It is very important to pick up you child on time (2:30.)  Often, children will become worried if they are not picked up on time.  I will wait outside no later than 2:35.  Children will be placed in the office at this time.

Children will only be released to those persons designated on the emergency card filed in the office.  Please keep this card up to date.

Toys and Sharing
Due to the possibility of loss and damage, toys from home should not be brought to school for any reason.  Our class does not have the typical "sharing" day where children are allowed to bring items to school.  We share each day during our "Daily News" time.  The children are encouraged to share orally and in written form throughout the day.  Communication is always a high priority in kindergarten.

"Wednesday Folders"
The  "Wednesday Folder" is a folder provided by Southport school.  Each Wednesday it will be sent home with notes from the office.  Please empty out and review all materials.  Please return the folder A.S.A.P. (in your child's backpack) so it can be used again by the next Wednesday.  Your child will be using this folder all year.  They will be responsible for taking care of this folder and placing it in my 'purple bucket' each time it is returned to school.

Homework
Homework is assigned once a week.  It will be sent home in the "Homework Folder" on Fridays and is due back by the next Wednesday.  Homework in kindergarten is designed to be done under the supervision of an adult.  Parents should interact with their child while encouraging neatness and accuracy.  Please make sure that your child is holding their pencil correctly and pulling their pencil in the direction of the arrows when forming letters.  Forming letters correctly is very important.  It is so hard to correct a "bad habit" once it's started.  Your child will need a pencil, scissors, crayons, and glue stick to complete assignments.

Snack

Kindergarten children have a small snack and a carton of milk daily.  Although the kindergarten milk "bill" (around $35)  is paid directly to the office and provided to the school, the snacks need to be provided by our kindergarten families.  I will assign one or two weeks of snack duty to each family. (To see schedule, click here.)  Some snack ideas are: cheese crackers, fruit, graham crackers, animal cookies or crackers, etc.  A pack of cheap napkins will also be needed each week.

**This snack and milk is totally separate (in payment) from the milk that can be purchased for lunch. (For the lunch menu, click here.) Lunch time milk has to be purchased each day using a lunch card.  Each child has a card automatically provided to them and parents need to put money "on it."  (It's like a debit card.)  Putting money on your child's lunch card can be done in the office, on line, or at the ESC building.

This nutrition break should not be a substitute for breakfast that should be eaten at home prior to arriving at school.  Why is eating breakfast so important?  Click here!

The Giving Tree
Young children learn best my doing hands on activities.  So, I need to ask for your help with some supplies.  Outside the classroom door is a "tree" with "leaves" on it.  On each leaf there is an item that will be needed in our classroom to do hands-on projects, make learning more fun and exciting, or just help our classroom be a nicer, friendlier place.  If you have this item at home (or Grandma's) please pluck a leaf off the tree and send the item to school.  I will GREATLY appreciate it if you can help out in any way.  This tree will be up all year, so if now is not a good time, check it out later.  Thank you!

A Time for Children...
Your child is special, rare, and unique.  I want them to LOVE kindergarten and come away with positive memories for a lifetime.  They should be happy, feel good about themselves and school, and work cooperatively with others.  I want them to have a love of books and a desire to read for entertainment as well as to learn new information.  To achieve these goals, I need the support and understanding of their parents.  Please call before or after school or send me a note if you have any questions or concerns throughout the year.  Let's work together to create the best possible environment for your child.  This is their time.  It is the beginning of their future!
